Dates for Celebrating Easter According to History
Easter Day, the annual celebration of the resurrection of Christ, did not immediately become a spe-cial feast day shared by all Christians. Christians in Rome were slow to take it up, preferring to view every Sunday as their Easter. Further east, the Church honored Easter annually, choosing the weekend on which the Jews celebrated Passover. As the exact date of Passover was determined by the spring equinox and the full moon, the date varied from year to year, falling somewhere be-tween 22 March and 25 April.
Official calculations of the exact date had to be made well in advance. At first, many Christian bish-ops followed the Jewish calculations, but the city of Alexandria, a busy center of astronomy issued its own pronouncement on when Easter would fall each year. Occasionally, Christians in some parts of the Mediterranean celebrated Easter seven days in advance of their sister churches else-where. In 387 the Christians in Gaul celebrated Easter on 21 March, Alexandria celebrated it on 25 April, with Rome in between those two dates.
Christian leaders had long thought it would be appropriate if all churches chose the same day for Easter, but it was not a matter of life and death. Even Milan and Rome were, in travelling time, much further apart than are the South Pole and the North Pole today. As for Alexandria and Rome, they were different worlds, and 99 out of every 100 Romans probably did not set foot in the Egyp-tian city even once in their whole life. Agreement on Easter was finally reached in east and west in 525, but the Irish monasteries still dissented.
